MCAN DIRECTOR OF FINANCE & BENEFITS

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Massachusetts Communities Action Network (MCAN) seeks a dynamic, justice-focused Finance and Benefits Director to join our team. This​ ​position​ is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of the organization, as well as providing the best benefits to employees, according to the organization’s budget and needs. 

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW 

MCAN is a network of seven faith- and values-based community organizations working for economic and racial justice. Our faith and values and critical racial analysis call us to fight for a Massachusetts where every person can live a life of dignity. We believe that those closest to the issues are best suited to lead our campaigns. Our organizing approach includes storytelling, relationship building, and training to develop the power of community leaders. 

Our statewide affiliates are Brockton Interfaith Community, Essex County Community Organization, I Have A Future, Pioneer Valley Project, Prophetic Resistance Boston, United Interfaith Action, Worcester Interfaith and we’ll soon be welcoming Berkshire Interfaith Organizing.

ABOUT THE ROLE

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial

  • Maintains full integrity of the organization’s finances - including all revenue and expenses, ensuring organizational policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws and regulations, are followed.

  • Manages the annual audit and tax filings in partnership with outside auditors.

  • Maintains QuickBooks bookkeeping and works directly with the accountant for monthly reconciliations.

  • Manages accounts payable/receivable and maintains organizational checking accounts, investments and invoices.

  • Provides relevant financial information and reports to the executive management team.

  • Generates monthly reports including accounts payable reconciliation, accounts receivable reconciliation, cash flow report, and balance sheet audits.

  • Assists the Co-Executive Directors with the development of the annual budget.

  • Processes MCAN Central's bi-weekly payroll and for its affiliates. 

  • Reviews and monitors receipts and invoices for staff credit card expenses and staff reimbursements.

  • Develops and supports the Financial Oversight Committee.

  • Develops and supports the Investment Advisory Committee

  • Supports grant management. 

  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Co-Executive Directors. 

Benefits

  • Researches employee benefits plans and vendors to identify those that present the best value.

  • Designs, recommends and implements new benefits programs. Examine possible plan designs and benefits cost changes.

  • Negotiates with vendors and administrators for best plans, options, and rates.

  • Serves as primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators.

  • Coordinates daily benefits processing. Handles enrollments, COBRA, terminations, changes, beneficiaries, disability, accident and death claims. 

  • Provides customer service support to internal and external staff. Develops communication tools to enhance understanding of the organization's benefits package.

  • Manages Paid Time Off for MCAN Central and its affiliates, including vacation, sick, personal, and bereavement time. 

  • Trains and informs directors and staff about new benefits policies, employee portals, and benefits overall. 

Compliance

  • Handles state filings such as the IRS form 990, MA Annual Report, and Form PC (Public Charity.) 

  • Conducts internal audits when needed for insurance companies. 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Economics, or Finance with a minimum of 5 years of experience 

  • CPA designation is highly preferred, but not required. 

PREFERRED SKILLS

Experience working with low-income and/or immigrant communities of color, with a commitment to cultural sensitivity and respect for differences. 

  • Excellent managerial skills and ability to evaluate the work of others.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Working knowledge of organizations' applicable financial practices and procedures, as well as a thorough understanding of state and federal rules and regulations.

  • Proficient with accounting software and standard office and accounting equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. 

  • Reliable transportation for traveling across the state (Network Location), evening and weekend work as needed. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

As a full-time exempt employee, salary is in the $80,000- $95,000 range and is based on experience. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401k retirement plan, mileage, and a flexible schedule. This exempt position will require 40 hours per week and may include traveling, evening and weekend work as needed.
